Some aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have disrupted activities at the national headquarters in Abuja over the position of the National Secretary.
The protest erupted following the declaration of Sunday Ude-Okoye as the authentic National Secretary by the Court of Appeal.
Opposing the court’s stand, the protesters took over Wadata Plaza in Wuse Zone 5 with placards carrying words like “No vacancy in the National Secretary’s office” and “Senator Sam Anyanwu remains the National Secretary.”
The atmosphere is charged, with security personnel struggling to maintain order.
Earlier, police officers were recorded at the PDP’s national headquarters, as both the embattled party National Secretary, Samuel Anyawu, and Ude-Okoye, whom the Court of Appeal declared the party’s authentic National Secretary, were expected to resume work.
It was learnt that some form of drama might occur due to the expected presence of both secretaries at the secretariat.
Both Anyawu and Okoye are laying claim to the office of the national secretary of the PDP.
Amidst the protest, the embattled national secretary drove into the premises and went straight to his office, where supporters cheered him on.
Right in his office, Anyawu called for prayers before responding to journalists’ questions.
Anyawu said the court judgment had been appealed and is now at the Supreme Court.
When asked about his views regarding the party’s position last week when it acknowledged Okoye as the National Secretary, he said the briefing by the National publicity secretary was his own opinion.
Upon his return to the party, Okoye, who held sway while he was away, challenged his right to return to an office he vacated to contest an election in his state.
The PDP national working committee acknowledged Okoye as the legally recognised National Secretary of the party, maintaining that the party highly regards the Court of Appeal’s pronouncement.
