The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been asked by a Federal High Court in Rivers State to compensate Mr Ubong Williams with a sum of N20 million for violating his rights.
Mr Williams was arrested by the EFCC for fraud in relation to Ikom Imam Flyover Bridge, Ibiaku Ikot-Ikot Udom Eshiet Road, Ekom Imam-Etinan Circus Road, and Etinan Circus-Ekpene Ukpa Ndoneyo-Awa Road construction projects.
However, the court ruled that the EFCC was in a breach of Mr Williams’s fundamental human rights by invading his private residence and destroying his properties, detaining him and inviting Mr Williams to the EFCC office on numerous occasions.
The anti-corruption agency has been restricted from any attempt on Mr Williams until the case against him has been resolved. They are also to publish an apology to Mr Williams in a major newspaper.
