Abuja is safest in Nigeria, FCT CP replies critics

By Linus Aleke, Abuja

The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Haruna Garba, has declared that Abuja is the safest place in the country today.

The Commissioner tasked his detractors to partner with the Police and other security agencies to make the city safer instead of creating trepidation in the minds of the people.

Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Police Command, Abuja, SP Josephine Adeh, in a statement yesterday, confirmed that there were reported cases of abduction and kidnapping within the territory.

Recall that some newspapers reported that, at least 12 people were killed and 139 others abducted when bandits and robbers attacked some communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the last six months.
This, the report added, is even as the popular One Chance gangs are fast returning and terrorising commuters on the roads.

But in a swift reaction, Adeh, said, “The FCT Police Command is fully aware of the news making the rounds about abducted and kidnapped persons in the communities of the Federal Capital Territory. The Command can confirm that there were reported cases of abduction/kidnapping within the Territory which heralded swift response from the Police who successfully rescued and reunited some of the abductees back with their family members”.

Also recalling that the Command arrested 11 kidnappers in the last month, the CP noted that the investigation is ongoing, adding that some of the arrested kidnappers were assisting the police to effect the arrests of fleeing members
The Command, the CP said, disagrees in its entirety, with the figures/ numbers in the news making the round, stressing that it is inaccurate and misleading, as it may incite panic in the public.

Garba also reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of all and ensuring residents of the FCT sleep with their eyes closed.

He also advised those circulating misleading information creating the impression that there was a sense of insecurity in FCT were not helping the issue.

“As a Nigerian, you must partner with the Police and other security agencies to make the city safer instead of creating trepidation in the minds of the people. FCT remains the safest place in the country,” he said.

The Commissioner advised the public to give information to the Police to save lives and properties.
