The family of former President Muhammadu Buhari has unveiled plans to establish the Muhammadu Buhari Foundation and Legacy Centre as part of a broader initiative to preserve the former leader’s contributions to national development and document his years in public service for future generations.
The announcement was made in Abuja by Boss Mustapha, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Central Organising Committee for Buhari’s first-anniversary memorial.
Mustapha said the initiative formed part of a series of activities designed not merely to remember Buhari’s passing but to institutionalise the ideals, values and leadership principles that defined his public life.
“Today’s event is only one in a series of activities that will, in due course, be undertaken to commemorate and preserve the legacy of our late leader.”
He disclosed that the proposed foundation and centre would be supported by books, archival materials, and other legacy projects devoted to documenting Buhari’s life, service, and contributions to Nigeria.
“The family is currently taking steps towards the establishment of the Muhammadu Buhari Foundation and Centre, alongside several publications and other legacy initiatives devoted to documenting his life, service and contribution to our nation.”
The event attracted President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Heads of State, leaders of the National Assembly, governors, traditional rulers, diplomats, captains of industry and senior government officials.
Mustapha described the turnout as evidence of the respect Buhari commanded across political, religious and ethnic divides.
According to him, the former president’s death in July 2025 generated an outpouring of grief both within and outside Nigeria, while his funeral in Daura drew world leaders, political figures and thousands of ordinary Nigerians.
Reflecting on Buhari’s leadership style, Mustapha described him as a disciplined leader whose decisions were guided by conviction, duty and commitment to national service.
“We remember a leader whose convictions shaped the decisions he took and whose commitment to the Nigerian state defined his years in public service.”
He thanked President Tinubu for honouring the occasion and urged Nigerians to draw lessons from Buhari’s life and years in office.
“The true measure of public service lies not in the offices held but in the values and examples left behind.”
Mustapha expressed confidence that Buhari’s ideals of integrity, patriotism and service would continue to inspire generations of Nigerians.
