How Ilorin hospital failed roadside vendor

A Nigerian man identified as Sammy Desh, has narrated how a roadside vendor  hit by a vehicle, died at an Ilorin hospital because there was no electricity, oxygen to save her.

According to him, the woman was still breathing two hours after she was hit by a car but lost her life at the hospital.

He took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote , “So a woman died in my car last night.

“She’s a roadside vendor, a car veered off the road, and hit several people who were standing/selling.

“She was taken to Civil Service Clinic at GRA in Ilorin, & i went with my friend to check on her. At the hospital, there was no light, no machine, & no oxygen. Just some drugs, bed, drip, & a solar lamp.

“She was still breathing & moving when we got there (2hrs after the accident), but some minutes after our arrival, she started gasping for breath with blood coming from her mouth & ass.

“We were immediately referred to General Hospital by the Nurse on duty, & we had to carry her with my car as there was no Ambulance at the hospital.

“We arrived at General Hospital, and i had to rush in to inform the Nurses of the emergency we had. & that we needed help.

“We started looking for wheel chair or stretcher to carry her, (A whole General Hospital didn’t have stretchers or wheel chairs free & available). I had to borrow a wheelchair that belonged to another patient, and also had to carry the body with my friend from the car (No nurse followed us outside to even check what’s going on).

“After we got her in, the Dr on call was looking for flashlight to check her eyeballs, we had to use the flashlight from my phone. Another issue was the Dr & Nurses looking for gloves to use (We were at the Trauma & Emergency ward). We were the ones that had to go buy gloves for them to use on the poor woman.

“When the gloves arrived, it was too late for her. The Dr initially said she’s slightly responsive, & after literally 2 minutes, she said sorry to us and the family members present that patient was BID.

“This poor woman died because her country failed her, she died because her government couldn’t provide basic medical facilities in hospitals, she died because of negligence.

“Just few days ago on X, we saw a Cow being Airlifted from a farm for medical care because of a leg injury but here we have a woman who couldn’t get anything close to the same level of care.

“I was told her husband died in 2009, and now her Children are orphans.

“I had never met her until last night, but this particular death feels too close to home for me.

“We are currently at the Muslim Cemetery in Ilorin for the burial.”
