Kwankwaso resigns from NNPP, signals political realignment

A former Kano State governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect, citing the need for “strategic realignment” in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

In a press statement issued on Sunday,  Kwankwaso said his decision followed careful consideration of the country’s current political trajectory, stressing that aligning with a different political platform would better position him to contribute meaningfully to national development.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he stated, describing the move as difficult but necessary.

Kwankwaso, who served as the NNPP’s national leader and its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, expressed gratitude to the party leadership and members for their support during his time in the fold.

He specifically acknowledged the contributions of the party’s National Chairman, Ajuri Ahmed, as well as members of the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and other stakeholders.

He also extended appreciation to supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, noting their dedication to the party’s vision and shared mission.

Despite his exit, the former governor emphasized the importance of continued collaboration among political actors in pursuit of national progress.

“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he said.

Kwankwaso’s resignation is expected to trigger fresh political calculations ahead of future elections, particularly given his influence in northern Nigeria and his strong grassroots following.

However, he did not disclose the political platform he intends to join next.
