Balogun fire: One body recovered, seven injured, four arrested

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) yesterday said a body was recovered as seven persons got injured in the fire that engulfed Balogun Market in Lagos.

The Lagos Territorial Coordinator, NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, who confirmed the incident yesterday in Lagos, said four persons were arrested for stealing valuables from shops.

The Director of Lagos Fire and Rescue Services, Margaret Adeseye, said, however, the fire was under control, adding that the fire started from the topmost floor of a five-storey building.

She said the cause of the fire incident which started in the early hours of yesterday, is still unknown.

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently attending to a fire outbreak at the famous Balogun Market which involved the topmost floor of a five-storey building.

“The fire is, however, under control as mitigation is on to limit the spread. Update to follow as the situation unfolds,” she said.

Other fire fighters are also on ground to assist the state’s fire service to control the outbreak.

Emergency responders at the scene of the fire included officials from NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Fire Service, and the Nigerian Police.
