FCT Poll: Barrier free participation for persons facing disabilities– Yahaya Bello

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC says it will remove all barriers that can hinder the full participation of persons with disabilities in the forthcoming February 12th FCT Area Council Election.

FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner Alhaji Yahaya Bello who stated this during the opening of a one day Voter Education and sensitisation for Persons with Disabilities in Abuja said every registered Person with a disability would be allowed to exercise their franchise during the poll.

Represented by the Deputy Director Servicom, Mr Dennis Ogu, the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner maintained that the commission would provide materials to enhance their participation.

He noted that the ad-hoc staff have been trained on how to handle Persons with Disabilities on Election day.

According to him, they will be in the queue and be allowed to cast their votes first.

The FCT chairman of the Joint Association of Persons with Disabilities, Mr Suleiman Ujah commended INEC’s effort in carrying the voter education to the rural areas.

Mr Ujah however appealed to traditional and religious leaders to embark on the vigorous campaign on the need for Persons with Disabilities to participate in the nation’s electoral process.

In a remark, the Deputy Director, Civil Society Organisation Mrs Dorothy Bello said Persons with Disabilities have been integrated into the nation’s electoral system.

Over Twenty different Groups of persons who suffer disabilities attended the forum.
