The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has raised concerns over the performance of Governor Bassey Otu, accusing his administration of failing to deliver impactful projects nearly three years after assuming office.
The state chairman of the PDP, Venatius Ikem, made the remarks in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page, where he described the administration as “mediocrity wearing the garb of People First.”
According to Ikem, the government had focused more on social ceremonies than tangible developmental projects across the state.
“It is remarkable that in three years, the highest points of Governor Prince Otu’s administration have not been the commissioning of any development project, but the celebration of his stepchildren’s marriages and Her Excellency’s birthday,” he stated.
He added that the PDP had prepared what he described as the administration’s performance scorecard and would soon present it to residents ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We have the scorecard, and we are polishing it for our people to be the judges,” Ikem said.
The opposition chairman also criticised the government’s handling of protests over alleged medical negligence in state-owned hospitals, claiming demonstrators were confronted with teargas and police brutality.
Ikem maintained that the PDP would continue to monitor the administration and hold it accountable to the people.
Political discussions in the state have recently centred on concerns over the pace of ongoing projects and the alleged non-payment of gratuities to retirees despite improved federal allocations and internally generated revenue.
There have also been speculations over an alleged move to replace the lawmaker representing Akpabuyo, Bakassi and Calabar South Federal Constituency, Joseph Bassey, with the governor’s stepson, Edem Dominic, ahead of the 2027 elections.
