Evolve strategic support measures to curtail flood disaster – Badaru urges FG

Irked by the devastating flood which has rendered over 55,000 households homeless, with over one billion naira farm produce washed away in almost 17 Local Government Areas in Jigawa state, Governor Muhammed Badaru Abubakar has advise Federal Government to evolve strategic supports to states to curtail the annual phenomenon.
Speaking while receiving National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA’s entourage at the government house, Dutse led by NEMA Director, special duty, Mal. Nura Bappa Ali, said the call had become imperative as flood menace calls for a holistic approach amongst states and federal government.
We on our part since the advent of the flood have been up and doing in taking emergency measures towards the provision of IDP’s camp where foods, medication, among others are been supplied to the affected flood victims, among other prompt assistance.
Governor Badaru assured NEMA of continued government support to its activities at all levels and commended the agency over its untiring support to Jigawa state in preceding years flood.
He informed NEMA’s entourage that since the occurrence of this year’s flood we’re up and doing in rendering support on our community to alleviate their untold hardship. We also uphold mitigation measures, among other prompt assistance to our community to cushion the effect of flood menace.
Earlier the team leader of NEMA’s entourage to Jigawa Mal. Nura Bappa Ali said they were in Jigawa on flood advocacy being the state one of the major food producers in the country with its citizens largely engaged in farming activities.
He lamented how the annual occurrence of flood continued to threaten this viable potentials as flood became a recurring experience in the country, drew the attention of state governments to direct their state’s Emergency Management Agencies, Front line LGA’s, and other response agencies to put in place preparedness actions.
Other measures are removing all refuse and weeds from water channels, drainages and all avenues for river run off so as to allow for free flow of flood water. Also stressed the need for state governments on the need to uphold the spirit of distilling river channels and canal’s with utmost sense of humour.
Representing the DG during the flood advocacy attribute the increasing flood disaster to climate change, pointing out that it is our responsibility as government and people to evolve strategies to minimize losses through adherence to warning alerts, early preparation and proper response.
NEMA’s entourage who were in Jigawa state to ascertain the extend damages caused by this year’s flood to Jigawa state were on flood advocacy are expected to advise the federal government appropriately on measures to curtail the annual phenomenon.
Least amongst the devastating council’s so far visited by the NEMA’s entourage includes Auyo, Birniwa, Birnin Kudu, Malam Madori, Miga, Kafin Hausa, Kaugama, Taura, Guri, Gwaram, Dutse, Ringim, Babura, Jahun, and Buji LGA.
