Residents of Gowon Estate in Alimosho area of Lagos State over the weekend joined members of the National Association of Seadogs and officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in a sensitisation walk aimed at combating rising cases of drug abuse in the community.
The campaign, which covered major hotspots including 5th Avenue and 31 Road, was organised by the Hawkins Deck of the National Association of Seadogs, covering the Alimosho, Ipaja and Akowonjo axis, in collaboration with the NDLEA.
Participants moved through the streets carrying anti-drug messages and engaging residents on the dangers of substance abuse, warning that addiction remains a growing threat to public health and community safety.
They highlighted consequences such as increased risk of diseases, mental health disorders, crime, family breakdown and loss of productivity among young people.
The Capn of Hawkins Deck, Mr. Nkem Ekwem, said the campaign was designed to encourage community vigilance and support for ongoing anti-drug efforts.
“The community must speak up, report suspicious activity, and know that support is available,” he said.
Officials of the NDLEA also urged residents, particularly youths, to avoid drug use and instead engage in productive ventures, including skills acquisition, sports and volunteer activities.
They emphasised the importance of seeking counselling and professional help for those struggling with addiction, noting that early intervention could prevent long-term damage.
The organisers said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to curb drug abuse at the grassroots and promote safer, healthier communities.
They called on residents to work collectively with law enforcement agencies to tackle drug trafficking and abuse, stressing that community participation remains critical in winning the fight against illicit substances.
