National grid: ‘Time to probe incessant collapses’

By Constance Athekame

Concerned by the incessant collapses of the national grid, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has concluded plans to conduct a full investigation into the immediate and underlying causes of the system disturbance affecting the grid.

Recall that before this latest incident that happened yesterday  at about 11.23 a.m., the national grid had collapsed several number of times in the country. Just  in February, some parts of Nigeria experienced power disruption following the collapse of the grid.

While several distribution companies announced the disruption, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) denied reports that the grid experienced a system failure twice in 2025.

Last year, the grid experienced a system failure several times, resulting in power outages across the country.

However, this ugly development has prompted Nigerian Independent System Operator’s move to unravel the causes of the incessant breakdowns of the natioanal grid.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Abdu Bello, Managing Director of NISO, confirmed the development and assured the public that the root cause would be thoroughly examined.

“The outcome(s) of the investigation will determine the remedial and proactive actions to be taken to forestall future occurrences,” Bello said.

According to him, the disturbance was triggered by the tripping of a Generation Company (GenCo), which caused a significant load drop.
“This, in turn, led to a cascading effect on other GenCos, resulting in a system-wide disturbance.”

Bello stated that NISO began grid restoration efforts at 11:45 a.m., starting with power supply to Abuja from the Shiroro Power Plant.

He added that substantial restoration had already been achieved nationwide.

“We crave your indulgence to bear with us as restoration is still ongoing,” he appealed.
Meanwhile, earlier yesterday the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC),  confirmed that the  national grid collapsed at about 11.23 a.m.

The company made this known on its verified twitter handle in Abuja.

It said; ”please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at about 11:23 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to the company, the outage affected electricity supply across its franchise areas.

Nigerians, who are already getting frustrated by regular power disruption have called on the federal government to declare emergency in the power sector. “We can continue like this, government should be proactive and rise up to salvage the power sector”.
