Hamas chief stresses reciprocal abidance by deal with Israel

The head of the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement, Ismail Haniyeh, has linked his group’s abidance by a truce deal reached with Israel on Israel’s adherence to the deal.

“The movement confirms its abidance by implementing the agreement and rendering it successful as long as the enemy [Israel] is committed to it,’’ he said in a televised address.

This is his first since a temporary truce between both sides went into force earlier Friday.

He added that the deal, which also involves a hostage prisoner swap, was the result of tough negotiations.

“The enemy has bet on restoring the captives by means of guns, killing and genocide. But after nearly 50 days, the enemy has bowed to the conditions of resistance and our brave people’s willpower,” Haniyeh said.

He vowed that his group would not vacate its positions in Gaza and refuse any “external interference’’ in the way the territory that Hamas has been governing since 2007 will be run in the future. (dpa/NAN)
