South East not safe for NUJ National Election, Delegates Conference- VP

There are indications arising from the daily killings in the South East that the zone is not safe for the forthcoming National delegates conference and election into the national body of the Nigerian Union of Journalists,NUJ

The insecurity that has plagued the zone resulting to killings ,especially of security operatives and innocent persons is raising serious concerns

The conference and the election have been scheduled to hold on Monday October 4 in Abia state, the home of the IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

However, a member of the National executive council and National Vice President,NUJ South East Zone C, Prince Petrus Obi,has raised the alarm over the growing insecurity in the zone, warning that the state is not safe for the event since the security of lives of the delegates who will be coming to Abia from various parts of the country cannot be guaranteed.

Prince Obi however, called for a change of venue, preferably a safer state

He said ” Drawing from the present security challenges across the Nation, including the Southeast and Abia state, the home state of the detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,I Comrade Petrus Obi, National Vice President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists NUJ,Zone C,here call for a new venue for the forthcoming NUJ Delegates Conference scheduled to hold in Abia state on Monday October 4, 2021″

“This is to ensure the safety of the delegates and other members who wool be travelling from all over the country to participate in the said conference”

Obi who advanced convincing reasons for his position, noted that the sit+ at- home order was one challenge which the people have obeyed for fear of their lives, in addition to the fact that the same month of October the bail application for Mazi Kanu will be argued in the court.

According to him, the period will be volatile as the IPOB agitators may cash in and do havoc because of the continuous incarceration of their leader

” It is on record that Abia, being the home state of Mazi Kanu has been worst hit by reports of insecurity amidst palpable tension that has enveloped the entire zone.Tje IPOB agitators sustained remonstration of the continuous incarceration of their son and leader Nnamdi Kanu may not have a better opportunity than this being presented by the conference to make a statement”

He therefore noted that it will be in the interest of the union and the professional body to postpone and move to a safer state in the face of the worrisome security situation in the Southeast
