72 suspects detained in Turkey over mob attack on Syrians

The Police on Friday said Turkish authorities in the capital Ankara detained 72 suspects for provoking the public on social media after a mob attack on Syrian homes and shops.
The Police had on Thursday separately detained 76 people for participating in riots and provocative social media posts.
The Ankara police said several among the nearly 150 detained had previous criminal records for looting, assault, or drug trafficking.
On Wednesday, hundreds of angry locals attacked homes, businesses, and looted shops they believed were owned by Syrian migrants in Ankara’s Altindag district after news that 18-year-old Emirhan Yalcin was stabbed to death in a fight allegedly with Syrians.
State news agency Anadolu said two foreigners were detained in connection with the death of a Turkish teenager.
The details of the fight were not immediately clear.

The riot came amid increasing public resentment against migrants in Turkey, home to more than four million refugees, 3.6 million of them Syrians.
Images on social media of hundreds of Afghans illegally crossing the border with Iran into Turkey have recently fuelled an anti-migrant sentiment in the country with some opposition parties calling to send migrants back to their countries of origin.
