BREAKING: Gunmen blow up Owerri prison, free prisoners

An unknown number of gunmen have freed over 1500 inmates in an attack on the Owerri Correctional Prison in Imo State.

The state police spokesperson, Orlando Ikeokwu confirmed the incident and urged residents not to fret as the government was handling the situation.

According to reportson social media, the attack occured on Monday morning at about 1am to 3am.

It was learnt that the gunmen burnt down the Imo State Police Command headquarters, alongside all the vehicles parked in the premises.

It was further learnt that the unidentified attackers made use of explosives, including dynamites to gain access into the prison.

Amnesty International had on Sunday reported that Owerri Correctional Centre had 2,156 inmates as against its installed capacity of 548 people.
