170 Escaped Prisoners Arrested in Edo

By Victor Ofure Osehobo, Benin

With less than 24hours to the expiration of the 2-day ultimatum to turn themselves in, Nigeria Correctional Service, NCS, officials say they have rearrested 170 of escaped prison inmates.

About 2000 of the prison inmates allegedly escaped this week, Monday, when protesters attacked the NCS’s two major prisons in Benin City.

But Governor Godwin Obaseki, hearing from the Controller of Correctional Service, Edo State Command, Mr. Babayo Maisanda, that 170 have been rearrested issued the ultimatum on Wednesday to the fleeing inmates.

He said they either return before the close of work on Friday October 23, 2020 or incur the full wrath of the law.

He said, “If they come in and go to the Nigeria Police Sapele road to check in, nothing will be done to them.

“However, those who do not report back after Friday night, we have all their records and all their biometrics and we will go after them and appropriate actions will be metted against them”.

The Governor said, “We know that some of the inmates may have been released as they planned, and others just used the opportunity to escape.

“We are using this opportunity to appeal to all inmates who escaped to come back on their own before the close of business in Friday this week”.
