2023: Nigeria needs urgent rescue surgery – Labour party

By Cajetan Mmuta
The National Campaign Council of the Labour Party has warned that Nigeria is sitting under its belly and if there is no urgent rescue, the situation will degenerate to a precarious level.

It also raised the alarm over alleged plans by mischief makers within the ranks of some of the major political parties to deploy foreign citizens and underaged voters in the forthcoming elections.

A chieftain of the Labour Party and Director of Administration of the LP Presidential Campaign Council, Arch Mike Nwafor who stated this in an interview with newsmen on Tuesday in Awka the Anambra state capital said that the party’s leadership has been getting worrisome reports of the ploy by other parties to use underaged and foreigners to scuttle the election process.

He pointed out that the attention of top management of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had been drawn to the ugly development being allegedly orchestrated by desperate politicians.

According to Okafor the plot is being perfected by some desperate politicians who are obviously trying to win by all means without following the laid down process as stipulated by the constitution.

He did not, however, mention the name of any political parties or candidates involved in the illegal act but maintained that the right thing must be done.

The LP Chieftain also urged the INEC to ensure that such anti-democratic acts did not take place as it falls short of Electoral Act and the nation’s constitution.

Arch Nwafor said, “We have been getting reports about underaged and foreign registration and we had to approach the Independent National Electoral Commission on that issue”

“This issue of underaged and foreign voting or registration has been the bane of the country’s electoral system and we are collaborating with the electoral body to stop it ”

“This country is lying on her belly and there is the need to rescue our country from this kind of sharp practices we have confidence in the electoral Commission that they would do the right thing and they also know the grave implications ”

Speaking also to the fears by the INEC that insecurity may affect the electoral process Nwafor stated that, “The development is really unfortunate and I don’t know why people are trying to truncate the process that would enthrone good governance and leadership for the country ”

“Those attacking the INEC offices are those that have the mindset of ensuring that Nigerian and Nigerians do not move forward but the wishes and aspirations of the Nigerian people would prevail over and against such elements,” he said.

He added that the party’s Presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi’ remains the most distinct, verifiable and credible candidate out of all the candidates of other major political parties jostling for the 2023 elections.

“Obi brought decency to governance while he was Governor of Anambra’ state. He didn’t have scandal; he has character,” he added.
