The Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), Cross River Sector Command, has stressed the need for commercial drivers in the state to install speed limit devices in their vehicles.
The Sector Commander, Mr. Ocheja Ameh underscored the need on Wednesday in Calabar at an event marking the 2021 Africa Road Safety Day Campaign and Remembrance of Accident Victims.
Ameh said the major cause of road crashes in the country remained over-speeding hence the theme of this year’s celebration which is “Act for Low Speed; Act Streets Act.”
“Speeding is the major cause of many accidents. We know there are potholes here and there but if you run at normal speed, you can always avoid these potholes.
“As part of the activities for this programme we are visiting some motor parks in all the four area commands to sensitize commercial vehicle drivers on the need to install speed limit device in their vehicles.
“The corps realizes the importance of speed limit device as the only means of curbing road accidents and we want all motorists to comply with this speed limit device option,” he said.
According to him, most registered commercial fleets have complied with the speed limit regulation of the FRSC and only the unregistered ones have yet to comply.
“But we will continue to advise them on the need to comply. Any organization with a fleet ought to install speed limit devices in the vehicles, whether commercial or not,” he said.
