JUST IN: US removes Nigeria from list of religious violators

Tobi Adebayo
Nigeria has been removed from the United States’ list of religious violators.

US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken made this known in a statement on Wednesday.

Recall that in 2020, the US had blacklisted Nigeria and nine other countries as “Countries of Particular Concern for having engaged in or tolerated ‘systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.”

Sharing the 2020 list, a former US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo had tweeted “These annual designations show that when religious freedom is attacked, we will act.”

“The U.S. is unwavering in its commitment to religious freedom. No country or entity should be allowed to persecute people with impunity because of their beliefs. These annual designations show that when religious freedom is attacked, we will act.”
