2027: Look beyond political slogans, propaganda, POMR tells Nigerians

The Peter Obi Media Office (POMR) has urged Nigerians to look beyond campaign slogans, rallies and political propaganda and examine what each candidate had to offer to tackle economic, security and developmental challenges.
The call was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by POMR Spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr., following the official lifting of ban on campaigns for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2026 Electoral Act had extended the duration for election campaigns from hitherto 90 days to 150 days.
Zekeri said the commencement of campaigns today Aug.19, marked the beginning of a 150-day period during which presidential candidates would present their programmes and visions to Nigerians ahead of the Jan. 16, 2027 election.
He urged Nigerians to listen to the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, as campaigns for the 2027 presidential election officially commence, describing Obi as the “Candidate of Conscience”.
According to POMR spokesman, the period provides Nigerians with an opportunity to critically assess the records, character, competence and policy proposals of all the presidential candidates before making their choices.
He said Obi’s political identity was associated with prudence, accountability and fiscal responsibility, adding that his campaign would focus on transforming Nigeria from a consumption-driven economy to one based on production.
He said Obi would also prioritise reducing the cost of governance, strengthening education and healthcare, improving security and creating opportunities for young Nigerians.
“Peter Obi enters this campaign not as a champion of one tribe, one religion or one region, but as a Nigerian seeking judgment based on his record, ideas and vision,” he said.
Zekeri said Obi had consistently maintained that leadership should be defined by competence, capacity, character, compassion and commitment rather than ethnicity or political entitlement.
He said Obi believed in restoring trust between government and citizens through transparency, prudent management of public resources and investment in productive sectors of the economy.
He further said Obi’s record as governor of Anambra demonstrated his emphasis on fiscal responsibility and investment in education, healthcare and infrastructure.
“Governance is neither a personal inheritance nor a reward for political loyalty. Obi’s message centres on the conviction that leadership must be earned through verifiable competence, character and measurable outcomes,” he said.
“The next 150 days will test not only the candidates but also the conscience of the nation. History is calling. Nigeria is watching,” Zekeri said.
He described the election as an opportunity for Nigerians to choose between what he called “old habits of waste, division and broken promises” and a future driven by competence, accountability, productivity and hope.
“Let the campaign begin. Let the people decide and let Nigerians choose hope over fear, competence over propaganda and conscience over convenience,” he said.(NAN)
