The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has issued a stark warning to President Bola Tinubu, cautioning that his political future—and that of the All Progressives Congress (APC)—is at serious risk ahead of the 2027 general elections due to worsening poverty, hunger, and insecurity across Nigeria.
In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, said the Federal Government must take urgent steps to address the severe economic hardship facing millions of Nigerians or face a mass rejection at the polls.
“Ohanaeze feels compelled to speak the hard truth: the APC stands on shaky ground. If this administration continues to downplay the growing poverty, insecurity, and hunger in the land, the consequences will be grave. Nigerians are suffering, and if their pain remains ignored, they will respond resoundingly with their votes in 2027,” the statement read.
According to Ohanaeze, the deteriorating economic and security conditions are so dire that even the combined efforts of the 36 state governors may not be enough to deliver re-election victory for President Tinubu. The organization accused some governors of misleading the president with empty promises, while others—particularly in the North—may secretly work against him when it matters most.
“Mr. President, do not be deceived. Many governors are painting a false picture of stability. You are at risk of relying on political allies who cannot and will not save your presidency. Some northern governors may pursue their own interests, while southern governors are too divided to offer reliable support,” Ohanaeze warned.
The group further criticized the lack of tangible results from the removal of fuel subsidy, noting that increased revenue allocations to states have not translated into better living conditions for the masses. It also decried the sabotage of the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy by governors, warning that new economic policies such as proposed tax reforms could face the same fate.
Ohanaeze urged President Tinubu to take decisive actions that include reducing electricity tariffs, overhauling his economic advisory team, cutting wasteful government spending, and making bold investments in agriculture and infrastructure.
They cited the example of Burkina Faso’s Captain Ibrahim Traoré, whose agricultural policies have bolstered food security and empowered local communities, suggesting that Nigeria must adopt similarly people-focused reforms.
“The president must engage directly with the people and move away from governors whose actions and inactions have deepened Nigeria’s economic crisis. The current hardship is unbearable, with food inflation, healthcare collapse, power supply woes, and housing shortages leaving Nigerians disillusioned,” the statement added.
