Ewuare II meets with National Peace Committee ahead of Edo polls

Retired General Abdusalam Abubakar has been commended for his peacemaking efforts across the country by the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II.

On Tuesday, the Chairman and members of the National Peace Committee visited the Oba at his palace and the Ewuare said that he was not surprised at the efforts Rtd. General Abubakar has been making considering his pedigree and the manner he acted to return the country to democratic rule during his reign as Head of State.

The Oba then informed the Committee that the politicians have created a lot of tension hence the need for the National Peace Committee of which the retired General is the Chairman.

General Abubakar backed up the monarch’s statement explaining that the visit to Edo is to hold a Peace Accord Meeting with politicians. He thanked the Ewuare for the initiative to hold a peace meeting between the political aspirants. He also said that the Committee had had a meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for security agencies, candidates of political parties and other stakeholders in Benin.

He concluded saying that they had all agreed to go by the terms of the peace agreement in readiness for Saturday’s gubernatorial election.
