By Nathaniel Zaccheaus, Abuja

Yesterday, the Northern Senators Forum assured Nigerians that the Senate would continue pursuing legislation and policies to mitigate the effects of environmental disasters and promote sustainable development.

The Chairman of the NSF, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, pledged to commiserate with the government and people of Borno State over the devastating flood that recently ravaged Maiduguri and its environs.

The statement read, “On behalf of the Northern Senators Forum, I extend our deepest condolences to the people and government of Borno State over the loss of lives and property resulting from the collapse of the Alau Dam.

“Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and those displaced by this devastating flood. The Senate will continue pursuing legislation and policies to mitigate the effects of environmental disasters and promote sustainable development.

“We appreciate the prompt visit by Vice President Kashim Shettima to assess the situation and provide leadership during this challenging time. His swift response demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting affected communities.

“We also commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving N3bn for each state to address flood and disaster relief efforts. This timely intervention will go a long way in alleviating the suffering of affected citizens.

“We urge all states to take responsibility and develop strategic plans to address climate change and prevent further environmental disasters.

“We stand in solidarity with the people of Borno State and assure them of our support during this difficult period.”

Meanwhile, the President of the Ninth Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, has commiserated with Governor Babagana Zulum and the people of Borno State over the severe flooding that ravaged parts of the state.

Lawan, in a statement issued yesterday, expressed sadness over the loss of lives and property caused by the flood, which recently displaced many residents and destroyed homes, farmlands, and other means of livelihood.

Lawan said, “I am deeply saddened by the news of the severe flooding in Borno State, which has caused untold hardship and suffering to our compatriots.

“My heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones and property in this disaster. I urge the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies to provide relief materials and assistance to the affected communities swiftly.”

The lawmaker representing Yobe North Senatorial District in the National Assembly also commended Governor Zulum for his prompt response in evacuating residents from affected areas.

Lawan said, “I want to commend Governor Babagana Zulum for his proactive efforts in evacuating residents from the flooded areas and providing temporary shelters for them. His leadership has been instrumental in minimizing the impact of the disaster.”

He commended the federal government for supporting Borno State in coping with the flood’s aftermath.

Lawan also urged the Borno State government to work with relevant agencies to find lasting solutions to the flooding in the state.

“While we commiserate with the victims of the flood, we must also work towards finding lasting solutions to this perennial problem.

“The Borno State government, in collaboration with relevant agencies, should embark on a comprehensive flood control programme to mitigate future disasters,” he said.
