50th anniversary: Ofem, 39 others bag 2025 UniCal meritorious service award

Ahead of the 50th anniversary of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Dr Ofem Enang, an associate professor of medicine and acting head of the department of internal medicine, has been honoured as one of the 40 outstanding lecturers in the institution.
As part of the activities to mark the 50th anniversary of founding UNICAL, the management has organized meritorious service awards for staff who have distinguished themselves in the service of the institution.

The awards are in several categories, including long and dedicated service awards, best deans, and outstanding lecturers in faculties/Institutes.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the award ceremony, Enang said, “I feel very bored that some of us have been rewarded for our dedication to service of our institution and our fatherland.
“Such recognition encourages more hard work and commitment and will reduce the jappa syndrome. It also shows that your input into academics is not a waste. We shall continue to promote the institution’s policies and programmes to the world.
“I commend the management, especially the able Vice-Chancellor, Prof Florence Obi, for finding some of us worthy of recognition and an indication that a prophet has an honour in his hometown.”
Enang is an accomplished Clinician in practice with a professional MPH and Fellowship in Endocrinology, who has demonstrated leadership experience in human and Material management, leading peers and superiors in building teams within a research-focused and training environment.
He deploys knowledge and skills from over 30 years of experience in medical practice. He has a good teamwork ethic and compliance with ethical standards. He also has excellent interpersonal and communication skills and can work under pressure to achieve objectives within specified timelines.
He is a member of Harvard Medical School’s Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Class of 2015/2016, and he holds a Certificate in Clinical Research (Clinical Trial Specialization).
He graduated in 1992 with an MBBch from the University of Calabar.
He obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Lagos in 2009 and a Fellowship from the National Medical College (FMCP) in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism in 2013.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE) and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP).
He was President of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD-UCTH 2003-2005), President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD 2006), and Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Cross River State (2010-2012).
He has traveled widely and attended several professional courses and workshops worldwide, including those in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, the Netherlands, and India.
