72 hours after resumption: Fubara meets Tinubu, says peace has returned to Rivers

  By Cross Udo, Abuja
The Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, yesterday, told the State House correspondents after the meeting behind closed-doors with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, that he has made peace with his principal, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Fubara, who fielded questions from newsmen after the closed door meeting, said he came to the State House to inform the President that he was back to his duty post after the six months suspension.
Describing the visit as a father-and-son discussion, he said he also sought guidance from the President so that there would not be a crisis again.
Asked on the reason for his visit, he said: “You’re aware that the suspension was lifted midnight September 17th, and I came in on the 19th. Ideally, it’s proper for me to see Mr. President and to tell him that I’m back, and I’ve also resumed my responsibility as the Governor of Rivers State.
“It’s not much. It’s a father-son discussion, telling him thank you and the areas where, if at all, there should be any issue for him to guide me properly so we don’t be in any situation that will bring a crisis again.”
On what the President told him, Fubara said: “He advised me on what to do and how to go in the right direction.”
Further asked whether real peace had returned and what should be the expectations of Rivers’ people, the governor said: “I don’t know what you mean. As far as I’m concerned, we have made peace. Fubara and his principal are working together.”
Fubara arrived at the seat of power about 6:20 pm clad in a white
native attire and black cap.
This is the governor’s first meeting with the President after his six months suspension and the lifting of the state of emergency in the state on September 18, 2025.
President Tinubu had in a broadcast on March 18, this year, declared a state of emergency in Rivers State suspending democratic structure and appointed a sole administrator to oversee the affairs of the state.
The Rivers State governor came shortly after the president met separately with the Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum and the governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq; Chairman of the Progressives’ Governors Forum and the governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma; the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass; the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji and the Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun among others.
