Terrorism: Army Chief emphasizes need for training

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, has restated the importance of training in the fight against insurgency ,terrorism and banditry in the country.

The COAS stated this when he flagged off the Nigerian Army Inter Divisions Combat Company Orienteering Competition in Ogoja, Cross River, on Tuesday.

Lt Gen Yahaya represented by Maj.- Gen Joseph Omali, said that the competition was meant to translate to relative ease in the conduct of operations.

He further noted that the competition would also enhance the leadership development of junior commanders.

He said : “I urge you all to strive hard in order to bring out the best in the championship and want to assure you that efforts and preparations for the competition will translate to relative ease in conduct of operations.”

He commended the 82 Division on the choice of Ogoja for the championship, adding the terrain provides all features needed for training of this nature.

Earlier, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division Nigerian Army Maj.-Gen Umar Musa, acknowledged the emphasis the Nigerian Army under the current leadership of COAS placed on training.

He expressed his confidence that the competition would be adventurous and entertaining.

This Nigeria gathered that the five days competition drew participants from six Divisions across the Nigerian Army and Army Headquarters garrison with various activities including fitness test, ten and thirty kilometers run with heavy loads and so on.
