Abandoned FCT projects: Wike orders contractors back to sites

By Ben Adoga, Abuja
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered contractors handling projects in the FCT that may have been abandoned to go back to their various sites.
Wike in a parley with contractors yesterday told them that he was ready to pay outstanding monies.
The minister said fixing the metro line was of utmost importance as he has been given a marching order by Mr President to do so.
Wike said fixing the metro line was key as Mr President wants to ride in it.
He said residents are complaining about the state of infrastructure on the FCT, adding that after accessing the various challenges in the areas of sanitation, street lights, shanties, roads, and others, it was time to start fixing them.

“We are mapping out strategies so that we don’t run into problems. Go back to the site. This time with direct supervision from my office. The major problem we have in this country is lack of supervision,” he stressed.
He charged the contractor to desist from cutting corners, saying, “If you have been compromising standard, too bad. We’re going to fund you, go back to the site, and do your work. We will restructure the ways projects are being funded.”
He said he was not ready to fund projects from national budgets alone, but direct labour and other means too.
Wike warned that timelines for projects must be respected as he was serious about the prompt and timely delivery of projects.
He said he would not owe contractors because when they work, they create employment and empower members of the public.
With an earlier meeting with directors of both FCTA and the FCDA, and the just concluded meeting with contractors, the stage is set for action, according to pundits.
