Air Peace has secured long-awaited approval to operate scheduled flights from Nigeria into London Gatwick and London Heathrow Airports, breaking a seven-year drought for Nigerian carriers seeking direct access to the UK’s busiest hubs.
Chairman of Air Peace, Dr. Allen Onyema, described the development as a hard-fought milestone in Nigerian aviation, stressing that it came through the backing of the UK government.
He praised the British Deputy High Commissioner for Lagos, Jonny Baxter, whose fairness and commitment ensured the airline received all necessary approvals.
“Because of his efforts and the open-mindedness of the UK authorities, we can proudly say today that Air Peace’s problem is no longer the UK.
“The UK loves Air Peace, and Air Peace loves the UK in return,” Onyema said.
He revealed that Heathrow authorities not only extended the invitation but are also planning a welcome reception to mark the airline’s debut.
The move, he added, reflects growing warmth in UK–Nigeria relations.
Onyema explained that the new Abuja–London services would ease the burden on Northern Nigerian passengers, who previously had to transit through Lagos to connect to international routes.
He appealed to government officials and the Abuja community to patronize Air Peace exclusively for London-bound travel.
He further urged Nigerian leaders to demonstrate patriotism by supporting indigenous carriers on international routes, noting that such patronage would boost the economy and showcase national pride.
According to him, the breakthrough is not just about Air Peace but about positioning Nigeria as a competitive player in global aviation while strengthening bilateral ties with the United Kingdom.
