The Sokoto State Government has announced the death of two students of Government Girls College, Sokoto, following an outbreak of gastroenteritis.
The state Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr Kulu Haruna, made the announcement during a press conference in Sokoto and said that 70 others were infected.
The commissioner revealed that the incident occurred from March 24, and the infected students were taken to the hospital and all treated.
She stated further that school had been shut down and 20 students were presently at the isolation centre to prevent the spread of the disease.
“No teacher was affected. More medical and auxiliary health workers were deployed that promptly addressed the situation,” she revealed.
Haruna dismissed rumors that the gastroenteritis outbreak was as result of congestion due to the relocation of some students from closed schools because of banditry.
“The school does not have poor sanitary and water supply system. No borehole is unhealthy or has salted water.
