The All Progressives Congress (APC) has moved to douse growing anxieties among aspirants ahead of its National Convention, with party leaders pledging a transparent, fair, and rules-based screening process.
Chairman of the Aspirants’ Screening Sub-committee and Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, gave the assurance on Monday during the panel’s inaugural meeting in Abuja, stressing that the integrity of the exercise would not be compromised.
He maintained that the committee would operate strictly within the framework of the party’s constitution, established guidelines, and the provisions of the Electoral Act.
“We are going to be transparent. We are going to be fair. We are going to be just to all aspirants,” Oyebanji said. “They are members of our party, and the party has laid down guidelines that will guide our conduct. There is nothing for anyone to fear.”
The reassurance comes amid heightened political interest and behind-the-scenes manoeuvring as contenders jostle for key national positions within the ruling party.
Also speaking, Co-chairman of the committee and Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, expressed confidence in the panel’s ability to deliver a credible exercise, noting that its composition reflects experience and institutional memory.
Ododo described the screening process as one that goes beyond internal party affairs, warning that its outcome could shape broader democratic expectations in the country.
“This assignment is not just about the APC but about the country,” he said. “Whatever we do today will have lasting implications for generations to come.”
He further commended the committee members for their dedication.
He acknowledged the presence of senior party figures, including former Senate President Ken Nnamani, whose contributions, he said, would strengthen the process.
“I appreciate all of you for laying a solid foundation and demonstrating selfless service to our party and the nation. Your experience is invaluable, and we are here to learn from you,” Ododo added.
With the convention just days away, the assurances by party leaders appear aimed at reinforcing confidence in the process and preventing disputes that could undermine party cohesion.
