ABLCM: AFN commends Access Bank for supporting marathon in Nigeria

As this year’s Access Bank Lagos City Marathon holds tomorrow, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has commended the main sponsor, Access Bank for its’ huge support to the growth of the marathon races in the country.

AFN President, Tonobok Okowa gave the commendation this morning while speaking at a world press conference held in Lagos to unveil some of the foreign runners, already in the country and the state of readiness for the gold label race which is expected to feature more than 100 foreign runners from different part of the world.

According to the AFN boss, the annual Access Bank Lagos City Marathon which is now in its seventh edition has really exposed Nigeria to the world as one of the great countries that have popularized marathon races.

“I’ve always been part of the marathon from the time it started in 2016. I’ve always attended because of my closeness to the people involved, who have done so well.

This marathon at this moment; they have done very well and they have written their names in a very high map of the marathon level in the World Athletics,” he said.

“Since 2016, they have always partnered with Access Bank Marathon, so I want to give kudos to Access Bank for the good work they are doing to sustain this marathon. We should not forget that after two editions Access Bank Marathon got its’ bronze label.

It’s a very big feat because only Bournemouth and Brighten were able to achieve that in a very short time. So we should applaud them for what they have done so far,” he added.

Group Head, Corporate Communication, Access Bank, Amaechi Okobi assured that the bank will not relent on its commitment to making the nation a great marathon nation and promised that this year’s edition will be better than the previous edition.

“We’ll never, never stop the sponsorship of this marathon. We’re very determined to take it to the highest level. This year’s event will even be better, ” he said.
