Four persons lost their lives and twelve others were seriously injured in multiple accidents along Ihiala-Onitsha-Owerri express road in Anambra State.
The crash which occurred at about 2:30 pm opposite a police station involved a trailer and two buses with sixteen persons on board.
According to an eye witness, the trailer suddenly rammed into the two buses being checked by police officers in front following brake failure.
He said, “The driver of the trailer sighted the police checkpoint, matched his brake which failed him and he rammed into the two buses being checked by the policemen in front of him as a result of brake failure.
Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), in the state Mr. Adeoye Irelewuyi said the injured were taken to hospital for treatment while the corpses were deposited in the mortuary.
He attributed the cause of the crash to overspeeding and brake failure.
According to him, “The injured persons were taken to Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala for treatment while the corpses were deposited in their Mortuary of the same hospital by the FRSC rescue team.”
“The obstruction has been cleared while free vehicular movements have been restored by FRSC rescue team, police, and the military men,” he said.

Also, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state command DSP Ikenga Tochukwu told ThisNigeria that, “On 28/11/2021 by 2:30 pm, Police cordoned off the scene of the accident along Onitsha/Owerri expressway involving four vehicles: one Mack trailer with reg. No AFM 230 XA, a lorry with reg No. NNE 891ZG and two Nissan buses with reg. No Awk 278 YD and AAH 836 ZV respectively.”
He said, “The vehicles were recovered and police operatives are currently on the ground to help facilitate easy traffic at the scene.”
