Adeyanju calls for scrapping of Naira abuse law

Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju has called for the eradication of the Naira Abuse provision in the CBN Act.

In a statement through his Facebook account, the lawyer addressed the issue, calling on the Nigerian National Assembly to revoke the law.

Adeyanju argued that there are more serious issues that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) can handle other than trying to curb the way of life, culture and tradition of Nigerians.

In the post, Adeyanju wrote, “After listening to the EFCC Chairman’s take on Tompolo, I once again called on the National Assembly to repeal the Naira Abuse provision in the CBN Act. It’s aimed at targeting the way of life, culture and tradition of the Nigerian people.

“Laws should be made to serve the people. People should not be made to serve the laws. The EFCC should be chasing real issues of corruption and not be distracted by issues of Naira abuse.”

Earlier, the Chairman of the anti-graft agency, Ola Olukoyede, urged Nigerians to desist from condemning Chief Government Ekpemupolo, widely known as Tompolo, over the allegation of Naira abuse.

This development follows a viral video from Tompolo’s 54th birthday celebration that showed the Niger Delta chieftain dancing while a man lavishly sprayed ₦1,000 notes before him.
