The proposed fumigation of markets run by the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has been suspended.
Markets in Abuja and other public places are usually fumigated periodically for the safety and health of the people.
Traders who spoke with This Nigeria expressed fears that the market authority might have collected money from them under the pretence that they want to fumigate as no new date has been fixed for fumigation.
Investigations revealed that shop owners were made to pay for the fumigation.
Lock-up shop owners paid ₦5,000 each, while open retail shops paid ₦2,000 and informal store owners paid ₦1,000 each.
The traders, however, could not say how many traders operate in the market to ascertain how much may have been collected from traders.
A trader, who simply identified herself as Mrs Yusuf, said, “We are afraid, these people are always collecting money from us for everything, especially this fumigation thing. Unlike Wuse Market Abuja Markets Limited fumigate regularly, here in Karu Market, they do it only once in a while. I just hope they will do it.”
