Former Nigerian international, Daniel Amokachi has backed the call to have the FIFA World Cup staged every two years against the current format of every four years.
This Nigeria can authoritatively report that former Arsenal manager and now FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, Arsene Wenger had on September 3, 2021, in an interview with a top French sports platform, L’Équipe, had proposed a two year World Cup format to FIFA.
Wenger’s proposal has, however, attracted huge condemnations, especially from European football bodies and stakeholders, who fear that staging the world cup every two years will harm the various domestic leagues in Europe.
But Amokachi, who spoke in a sports radio program in Lagos, said the idea is a progressive one, as it will benefit players more, pointing out that four years is such a long period for a player to wait before having the opportunity to feature at the world cup.
“After all the discussions with different minds, I realized that two years world Cup makes a lot of sense.

That four year takes a lot out of some players not making it. You can be in top shape of your life and then that two years you couldn’t make it because you are waiting for four years before you get there.
But the two years format allows you to play more world cup belts in your CV. So, I’ll support that two years,” said the former Club Brugge of Belgium and Everton of England star.
