Crying marathon: Demand clean bill of health from intending record breakers, Shehu Sani urges GWR

Former Kaduna Senator, Shehu Sani has advised the Guiness World Records to demand medical records of intending participants before accepting their applications to break records.

His comment comes a few days after a Nigerian man went partially blind while attempting to set a new crying record.

Tembu Ebere confirmed to the BBC that he partially went blind while attempting to cry for seven days to set a world record.

Ebere claimed that he had health problems, adding that he had to cry for seven days straight to set the record, while temporarily losing his vision in the process.

Ebere claimed that during the exercise, he suffered from headaches, puffy eyes, a swollen face, and went partially blind for 45 minutes.

However, in a tweet on Wednesday, Mr Sani asked GWR to disqualify persons that are not medically or mentally fit from engaging in the risky adventure.

“The Guinness World Records group should demand for the medical records of its intending participants,in view of the extreme pressure and stress candidates subject themselves for the purpose of the record trophy. The risks for record shouldn’t ignore health concerns.

“@GWR should disqualify persons not medically or mentally fit for such risky adventures. This is also a moral and ethical issue. The report of a Nigerian who cried himself to blindness should be the reason for the needed health and mental check before participation. @GWR shouldn’t be a suicidal platform for records,” Shehu Sani wrote.

Since Baci’s cooking marathon garnered media attention, Guinness World Records has seen an increase in attempts by Nigerians to break records.

Guinness World Records recently issued a warning, saying, “Please enough of the record-a-thons,” after a Twitter user had tagged the body about holding an “idea-a-thon” and a “puff-puff-a-thon.”
