Arase was a rare officer, loyal, principled, says ex-IGP Ehindero

Former Inspector General of Police, Otunba Sunday Ehindero, has paid glowing tribute to the late Dr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase, describing him as a rare breed of officer whose life and service left an indelible mark on the Nigeria Police Force and the country at large.
In an emotional statement, Ehindero recalled how Arase’s brilliance and dedication made him stand out as a Principal Staff Officer (PSO). Breaking a long-standing tradition where new Inspectors General often replaced inherited PSOs, Arase’s competence and loyalty ensured he served under three consecutive police chiefs, including Tafa Balogun, Ehindero himself, and Mike Okiro.
According to the former IGP, Arase towered above his contemporaries as a humble yet courageous officer, a man of strong convictions, and a fair-minded arbiter in sensitive matters.
“He was a living symbol of diehard determination to reform investigation in policing. His many publications remain enduring legacies in Nigeria’s policing trajectory,” Ehindero said.
He further described Arase as a man of candour and a large heart, widely respected by both his superiors and subordinates. Beyond his professional exploits, Ehindero noted that Arase was kind, generous, and passionate about mentoring young officers, as reflected in his establishment of the Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation.
Born in Owan West, Edo State, Arase rose through the ranks by sheer effort and discipline to become Nigeria’s 18th indigenous Inspector General of Police. Ehindero hailed him as a detribalised patriot who epitomised hard work, integrity, honesty, and benevolence.
Quoting from the scriptures, Ehindero urged Arase’s family to take solace in faith: “Be filled with the spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs… and for everything giving thanks to God the Father.” He prayed for God to grant the late police chief eternal rest and to console his wife, children, and relatives.
“Solomon has fought the good fight, he has finished the race, and he has kept the faith. At sunrise and sunset, we will always remember him,” Ehindero concluded.
