Assassination attempt on close aide to Ukrainian president fails

The Ukrainian Police on Wednesday confirmed that the car of the President’s close aide, Serhiy Shefir,  was shot outside Kiev in an apparent assassination attempt.

The police added that the aid was unharmed despite more than 10 shots being fired at the vehicle, but the driver was injured.

The car apparently continued driving for five kilometers after the incident.

The Minister of Interior, Denys Monastyrskyi, said the attack took place in woodland on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital.

He said the attackers fired with an automatic weapon but have not been identified.

Ukraine President, Volodymyr Zelensky, who is currently attending the UN General Assembly in New York, condemned the incident.

Shefir held a press conference in Kiev, few hours after the shooting and said that the attack was carried out with the aim of intimidating the country’s top leadership.

He denied any major disputes within the presidential administration and said that Zelensky would not be changing course.

The shooting came a day before the Ukrainian parliament is due to vote on a so-called anti-oligarch law.

The law is intended to curb the influence of Ukrainians who became enormously rich in the 1990s and retain an enormous amount of power in the country.
