Assault: Police seeks court approval to detain Seun Kuti

The Lagos Police Command on Tuesday asked a Magistrate court in Lagos to permit the detainment of Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti for 21 days.

The musician was arraigned before a court sitting in Yaba for a one-count charge of assault on a police officer.

According to the police prosecutor, S. A Adebese, Kuti’s act contravened Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.

He prayed the court to grant an order for the police to remand the musician for 21 days pending legal advice.

The singer’s counsel led by human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), pleaded with the court not to grant the remand, arguing that they were unaware of the remand application.

ThisNigeria reported that Seun Kuti was arrested for assaulting a policeman on Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.

Defending his action, Kuti alleged that the officer tried to kill him and his family.
