Dr Chinyere Onubogu, President, Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Anambra chapter, has called for stiffer punishment for anyone found to have violated the rights of women.
Onubogu’s call is contained in a statement issued by the association’s Secretary, Dr onyinye Nwazor and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Monday.
She said that call had become imperative given the treatment meted out to an unnamed woman in a viral video over the allegation of adultery.
Onubogu described the video clip as quite graphic, as the victim was paraded naked over the demise of her spouse during conjugal intimacy.
“I am overwhelmed with total disbelief and shock over the action as depicted in the circulated video clip and wondered that such barbaric act could happen in this time and age.

“It is worrisome that such dastardly acts are still occurring in our present society and particularly, in Anambra.
“The association joins its voice with others to seek redress for this young widow,” he said.
Onugbogu called for an autopsy to shed more light on the incident.
She stressed the need for members of the public to be educated on possible causes of ‘sudden death’ of any deceased, who had hitherto appeared healthy.
Onubogu said that chief of the ailments was cardiac arrest (heart attack) which, she noted, could be triggered by a myriad of cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease as well as undiagnosed and untreated high blood pressure, among others.
She explained that the illnesses could develop over the life course or be present in varying degrees from birth, adding that the medical diagnoses of sudden death were limitless.
“They have been researched into and so, there are no myths surrounding it. Sufferers can remain without symptoms until a major crisis occurs,” Onubogu said.
She appealed to traditional rulers and community leaders to take better care of women and indeed, all community members and ensure that such barbaric acts were discouraged.
Onubogu urged relevant authorities to see that perpetrators of the dastardly act were brought to book to serve as a deterrent to those who did not believe in the relevance of women.
She also called for immediate withdrawal of the video from circulation.
“We plead with the general public to stop circulating this dehumanising clip to help limit the psychological trauma to the young widow,” she said. (NAN)
