ASUU strike: Labour mobilises for nationwide strike

Reacting to the protracted strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC is mobilising for a nationwide strike.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the NLC NEC meeting at Pascal Bafyau House, Abuja, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, NLC President, said the NLC was organising a one day warning strike to mobilise Labour in solidarity with the unions in the education sector, especially ASUU.

He lamented that students have been at home for four months running and that frustration had set in resulting in escalating crime in the country.

Wabba said after the warning strike a full scale strike will commence if the issues are not attended to.
The NLC also lamented the issue of ghost workers which the federal government claimed it uncovered and the money recovered from the exercise.

He challenged the government to expose those behind it and prosecute the perpetrators.
Labour equally observed that the last time there was salary review in the country was in 2009. Wabba noted that in the past 14 years no salary review, apart from the minimum wage, in public service.

Labour demanded for immediate review of salaries in the public service. He said the judiciary remains critical in the life of any nation and that it was disturbing for judicial officers to cry out for wages.

On insecurity, he said the situation has deteriorated in the last four years. Wabba drew attention to those kidnapped in the Abuja Kaduna bound train are still in captivity.

He urged the government to deploy information technology to assisting the military in tackling insecurity.
He noted that no nation develops with insecurity and that the sooner the government deals with the situation the better for the economy.

He also challenged the Kaduna State government on this sack of 2,267 teachers in the state.
The Labour leader stated that the teachers were employed by the El -Rufai administration four years ago and left them ad casuals.

He assured that Labour was ready to confront governor El – Rufai on that matter and will not allow him have his way.
