Man bags six months in jail over burglary, theft

An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, on Friday, sentenced one Toheeb Taiwo to six months imprisonment over housebreaking and theft of cash and property, valued at N378,0000.

Taiwo, 22, whose address was not given, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of burglary and stealing.

The Magistrate, Mrs Olajumoke Somefun, said that all the pieces of evidence presented in court had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the convicts were guilty of the offence as charged.

Somefun, however, sentenced the defendant to one-year imprisonment with an option of an N100,000 fine.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP. Olakunle Shonibare told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Oct. 18 at Fajobi Village via the Bode Olude area in Abeokuta.

Shonibare stated that the defendant broke into the house of one Mr Adegboyega Oluwasina and stole a plasma TV, valued at N75,000, a sound system (worth N25,000), and four phones valued at N143,000.

Other items stolen include pressing iron, valued at N2,000, standing fan (N10,000), one tape recorder, valued at N12,000 and MP1, valued at N51,000, and a cash sum of N60,000, all totalling N378, 000.

He explained that the convicts maliciously damaged the house ceiling to gain entrance into the house.

The prosecutor noted that the offence contravened sections 411(2) and 451 of the criminal code laws of Ogun 2006.
