AU, ECOWAS to collaborate to tackle terrorism in Sahel region

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has expressed the urgent need to collaborate with the African Union (AU), to curtail the spate of terrorism in the Sahel region.
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, said, anything that affects the Sahel region affects the entire continent of Africa, hence, the urgent need to partner to tackle terrorism in the Sahel.
Dr. Touray said this in Abuja while welcoming the delegation from the Mission of the African Union to Mali and the Sahel, led by Maman Sambo Sidikou.
The President of the ECOWAS Commission underscored the need for ECOWAS and AU to work together within the spirit of complementarity.
He highlighted the need to enhance the Regional Force to fight terrorism, and the importance of treating the entire Sahel as part of the Region.

He said, “Whatever the Sahel faces affect the entire Region. It is important to treat all of the Sahel as part of our Region”.
The High Representative of the African Union Commission (AUC) to Mali and the Sahel, Maman Sambo Sidikou,
stressed the need for AU and ECOWAS to work together to fight terrorism.
He appreciated the important role ECOWAS is playing in bringing peace to the Region.
Directorate of Communication, ECOWAS Commission in a statement, said, the delegation discussed the situation in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso and the humanitarian situation in the Region.
