As a run up to the 2021 Kano state local government election, the Kano state Independent Electoral Commission, KANSIEC has announced the cancellation of candidacy fees for persons with disabilities vying for councillorship and local government chairmanship positions.
The chairman of the commission, Professor Garba Ibrahim Sheka said the decision to debar persons with disabilities from paying to obtain contest forms is to encourage inclusive participation in the forthcoming LG polls.
Sheka, who made the disclosure when he received members of the association of Persons with Disabilities PWD Kano state branch in his office recently, averred that KANSIEC would enroll PWD members who emerge as candidates for the polls for free.
He disclosed that PWD members were outstanding at the erstwhile LG polls held in the state, stressing that they ought to be encouraged to surge out to participate in the 2021 LG polls without hindrances, prompting the decision by KANSIEC to hand out free candidacy forms to PWD members.
The chairman PWD Kano state branch, Abdulhamid Suleiman Muhammad Dakata said they were at the commission to advocate that “there is ability in disability.
He appealed to the commission to engage the services of persons with disabilities, prior, during and after the local Government elections.
