Bandits demand N1bn ransom for kidnapped 286 school children

Threaten to kill hostages after 20 days 

The bandits that last week kidnapped over 286 pupils and staff in Kuriga in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State have demanded a total of N1bn for their release.

It was reported that the kidnappers spoke through the principal of the school, Abubakar Isah, who was abducted alongside the students.

The terrorists contacted one Aminu Kuriga, a friend of the school’s principal, at around 2pm asking for the amount.

“One of the abductors called, using a private number. He said they were at the northern fringe of Dansadau (a community in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State). If we bring the amount, all the children will be released.

“They gave a request to pay the ransom within 20 days, effective from the date of the kidnap. They said they will kill all the students and the staff if the ransom demand is not met.”

“We briefed the Kaduna State government about the telephone conversation; they took note and asked us to go,” a resident said, asking for confidentiality.

It was gathered that the location where the terrorists asked their link men to deliver the ransom is part of Kwiambana Game Reserve. This dreaded forest crosses North-West and North-Central regions.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has vowed not to pay ransom to kidnappers in any part of the country.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said while addressing journalists after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday that the President also directed security agencies to ensure the release of all kidnapped victims without the payment of ransom.
