A bill seeking to give Climate change a legal framework in the country is said to be awaiting concurrence at the Senate, Hon. Samuel Onuigbo has revealed.
Onuigbo (APC-Abia) who is the sponsor of the bill said this while briefing newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said that the objective of the bill was to ensure that Nigeria had a legal framework that would help coordinate her efforts at Climate Change mitigation and adaptation.
The lawmaker who represents Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South of Abia State in the House of Representatives said that he was assured that unlike in the 8th senate when the President could not assent due to disagreement, this time it would be assented having ironed out the grey areas.
He said that the objective of the bill was to ensure that Nigeria had a legal framework that would help coordinate her efforts at Climate Change mitigation and adaptation.
He said that although the bill was passed by the 8th National Assembly and duly transmitted to President Muhammadu Buhari, but was declined assent due to a number of reasons.
“I am happy that on July 6, during the Committee of the Whole at the House of Representatives, our report was considered and adopted.

He said that the bill was passed by the House and would now be transmitted to the Senate for concurrence.
Onuigbo said that the lawmakers were aware of the danger of climate change, adding that this motivated him to sponsor the Climate Change Bill in the 8th Assembly.
According to him, the objective was to ensure that Nigeria has a legal framework that will help coordinate her efforts at Climate Change mitigation and adaptation.
He said that as an important arm of Government, it was the duty of the Legislators to make laws that would help the executive realise its goals and its promises to the people.
He added that the bill was part of its contribution to aid the President, and the government to achieve its goal and promise of fighting Climate Change.
