Blasphemy: Ignore Muslims asking for apology, Soyinka tells Davido

Noble Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has urged popular Nigerian singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido to ignore those asking him to apologise for posting the ‘blasphemous” music video on his social media page.

Backing Davido’s prolonged silence, in a statement released on Tuesday evening, Soyinka stated that Davido does not need to apologize for posting the music video on his social media page.

Soyinka argued that former Kaduna governor, Nasir El Rufai, had made disparaging remarks towards Christians in the past without having to apologize.

“There was nothing to apologize about, and that applied equally to El Rufai’s comments at the time. It should come as no surprise that I equally absolutely disagree with Shehu Sani if indeed, as reported, he has demanded an apology from Davido on behalf of the Moslem community,” the statement by Mr Soyinka read.

Soyinka said further that Deborah Yakubu, a second-year Christian college student who was slain by a mob of Muslim students in Sokoto last year over suspected blasphemy, was not killed because of Davido’s song.

The call comes as prominent Nigerian Muslims including Nollywood actor Ali Nuhu, former Kaduna Senator Shehu Sani, urged the singer to apologize to the Muslim community.

Davido came under fire after sharing a clip of the music video for his signee, Logos Olori’s new single, “Jaye Lo,” on Twitter, in which people can be seen dancing and worshipping in front of a mosque.

The singer took down the video, but he has refused to apologise.

Despite the video’s removal, some Muslims continue to demand that Davido apologise in public.
