BREAKING: Akufo-Addo re-elected as Ghana’s president

Polls 51.59% votes against Mahama's 47.36%

Incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana has won his re-election bid.  He defeated former President John Mahama, his closest challenger, when he polled 6,730,413 or 51.59 per cent of total vote cast, BBC reports.

Mahama of the National Democratic Congress won 6,240,889 or 47.36% of total votes cast.

Over 17 million eligible voters participated in the election which observers described as peaceful.

It was the first time Ghana would use electronic voting.

Akufo-Addo, the candidate of the New Patriotic Party, won in eight of the 16 regions while Mr Mahama won in the other eight.

Jean Mensah, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, said the final results were without that of Techiman South because it was being contested. She, however, added that the total votes in the constituency is 128,018 and will not change the outcome of the result.

“By the power vested in me as the returning officer, it is my duty to announce once Nana Akufo-Addo as the president-elect of Ghana,” she said.
