Breaking: FG set to lift Twitter ban

The Federal Government has said the ban on micro-blogging and social networking service, Twitter, will be lifted “in a matter of days”.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture speaking after this week’s virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja said that some condition have been given to Twitter which includes setting up an office in Nigeria, with a Twitter staff of management cadre.

‘We appreciate the patience of Nigerians. I want to assure you that we have made very tremendous progress. We have met with Twitter both physically and in writing. We are actually almost there.

Recalled that government on June 4 suspended indefinitely, the operations of the micro-blogging and social networking service, Twitter in Nigeria over the persistent use of the platform for activities capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

After much cry the government set up a team comprising of Lai Mohammed, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), Ministers of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami and Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema.

Others are Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola (SAN) and Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo (SAN) as well as other relevant government agencies to meet with Twitter so as to reach a common ground.

Government had said they must  apply for licensing with the National Broadcasting Commission ( NBC).
